Etaoin’s Triumphant Return

“Then I lunged with my spear… which got caught in the bones. So I threw my shield at him… and it missed. But it wasn’t my fault because that stupid bird was flapping around my head like some sort of maniac… bird and I couldn’t see a thing it was so dark!”

Daisy Appledore expertly raised an eyebrow. She probably practiced in the mirror. “Bird?”

“Oh, I, uh… wasn’t exactly alone. But I had no choice! We were trying to escape from the wights. They were everywhere!”

“We?” Appledore queried.

“Uh, you remember that Lore-Master who was here the other day?”

Daisy Appledore put a hand to the pressure points above her eyes. “Here as in jailed here?”

“Yes…”

“Please tell me you’re not talking about that good for nothing Ingolemo?”

“Uh…”

“I think I would just rather not know.” Appledore sighed. “How did you get out? No, no, never mind. Let’s go back. You threw your shield.”

“I didn’t mean to! It just… my palms were so sweaty and-”

“Where were your gloves?”

“I think they might still be lying near on the the barrows I was investigating.”

“Etaoin, I’m at my wit’s end with you, girl. What were you thinking?”

Etaoin wilted before her trainer’s hard stare. “I’m doing my best, I really am.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of. Your best just isn’t good enough. You performed in the line well enough, so what happened?”

Etaoin frowned. “I was in a situation that was totally out of my control thanks to that… that scoundrel.”

“You’re always going to be  in a situation you don’t control! You think the enemy is going to come up and ask if you’d not mind very much if they attacked you just now?” said Appledore. “Use your head, girl! That’s what being a Warden is all about. We’re not the ones on the front lines, able to pick and choose our battles. We’re the ones waiting and watching to see what the enemy will send at our homes and our families when they think we’re the weakest. You’ll never be in control! You have to think quick and react quick. That’s the heart of being a good Warden.”

Daisy Appledore stared Etaoin up and down. “Is that a new hauberk?”

“Yes,” Etaoin whispered dejectedly.

“Perhaps you need a bit more of a challenge to wake you up from these childish fancies,” Appledore said disapprovingly. “I expect seeing a real war zone would do it.”

Etaoin’s jaw dropped. “A war zone?”

Appledore smirked. “Yes. We’ve received word from the village of Trestlebridge up north. They’ve been under attack by orcs and need aid. Seems like just the thing to take the glitter out of your eyes. Report to Guardsman Otley and help him in any way you can. Don’t report back to me until the threat is neutralized. You’re dismissed.”

Etaoin slumped down outside the jail house. Being a Warden was more difficult than she had ever imagined and every day took her farther from her original goal.

“My dear lady, whatever it is, it can’t be that bad.”

Etaoin felt the bottom of her stomach drop at the sound of the voice. “You! You got me into this mess to begin with!” She jumped up and reached for the skinny Lore-Master’s throat.

“Ack! What did I do to deserve this kind of treatment?” Ingolemo twisted away from her grip with practiced ease.

“What did you do?” Etaoin raged at him. “Let’s see, first you disrupted about one hundred barrows full of wights until we were being chased by and army of the dead. Then you dragged me into, of all places, the GREAT barrow. Yes, I asked, and you knew fully well what would be waiting in there for us! Just so you could get you hands on some bloody treasure! Should I go on?”

For some reason, Ingolemo looked properly abashed at this outburst. “Yes, yes, you’re right. I’ve not exactly shown you a good time, have I?” He flashed a toothy smile at her. “Can I make amends?”

Etaoin recovered from her shock quickly. She smiled wickedly. “I think you can, in fact. I’m being sent to Trestlebridge to give aid against the orcs that are attacking them. You can come with me and help.”

“What? Orcs?” Ingolemo cried. “Oh, no, you see I, uh, am really no use at all against orcs. Trestlebridge? Never heard of it. Can’t be very important. Lovely to see you again. Goodbye!”

Etaoin grabbed his collar before he could run. “It’s in the north, up the Greenway. It’ll be a lovely walk, don’t you agree, Huginn?”

The bird cawed indifferently, as always.

Alt Wars: Casualty

Posted On: November 16th, 2009
Posted By: Fionnuala
Posted in: Random Thoughts

Some time ago I made a formal list of all of my intended alts. Since then they have been violently vying for my attention. Some of them have done very well for themselves.

Fionnuala, always my favorite character, is only a few bars from 58 and I expect her to make 60 by the weekend. Questing in Lothlorien is delightful. She’s looking forward to finally being instated as a full member of the Elven Kinship Tirn en Taur and journeying with them into the darkness of Mirkwood soon.

Etaoin has found her voice and become the star of her own series of stories right here. (Though my husband’s character, Ingolemo, is always trying to steal the spotlight.) She and Ingolemo are currently in North Down and there should be some hilarious misadventures to come.

Kwelene is coming along as well. While she has not yet made an appearance in my writings, her stories continues to be fleshed out in my mind as I conduct research. She fascinates me. Soon her history will be revealed, but for now I’m just having fun whacking things with my swords.

Alfdis, my lowly Captain, got a new hairstyle and teamed up with my husband’s Warden, Gildannen, in an effort to get more play time. It worked. With Gildannen tanking I plan to focus on buffing and healing and being generally supporty. So far it’s been a lot of fun. This promises to be an awesome pair.

And that brings me to Neasa. Here’s the thing. I’m not actually a fan of playing melee in this game. Yet I’ve got a Warden, a Champion and a rising Captain. All melee classes. Then there was Neasa, my Burglar, sitting there waiting for me to play her and I just couldn’t bring myself to. I don’t want any more melee classes. I want more casting classes. I LOVE being a Minstrel and I’m super attracted to Lore-Masters. I just don’t have enough play time for them all.

So Neasa got the axe today.

Sigh. Isn’t she cute? Sorry, Neasa. Maybe someday.

((Yes, another fluff post. I promise I’ll get back to my music and stories soon. After this flu blows over.))

Blinded By the Light

Posted On: November 14th, 2009

For the past week I have been suffering from the most awful sinus infection. The kind with the pain that makes it hard to live and especially hard to think. So my many stories and projects have been shoved onto a back burned while I focused on surviving. While I am still not all better, I feel that my brain has cleared enough to post a little something OOC about my recent adventures.

So, here’s the thing. I hate Moria. I really, really hate it. I put off going there until level 52. And I fled as fast as I could at level 56. Don’t get me wrong, there are some interesting things there. Obviously there was some excitment at the Chamber of Marzarbul and the Bridge of Khazad-dum. Anything from the books makes me happy. But over all, it was a great big dark and depressing maze. Questing there has been a nightmare. Never knowing where were were going or whether that was a set of stairs or a drop into the dark abyss before our feet. It took us forever (at least it felt that way) to get four levels out of that place.

I appreciate what Turbine did with Moria, I really do. It’s a fantastic realization.

But as a place designed for spending 10 levels in… it sucks. So when we finally trudged our weary feet out under the stars again it was like a weight being lifted off our shoulders.

We immediately devoted ourselves to earning the favor of the Golden Wood.

The next level flew by and it was pure joy to quest under the open sky again. Early on in level 57 we made it to aquaintaince with the Galadhrim and entered Lothlorien for the first time.

Just… I mean… It’s so… Words fail me, at the moment. Only one thing is for certain. I never want to leave!

Becoming, continuation.

Posted On: November 6th, 2009
Posted By: Fionnuala
Posted in: Becoming

Some time ago I conceived the idea of a story exploring the culture and history of the Elves who lived beside Cuivienen and in particular that of the Elves who did not heed the call of the Valar. The Avari Elves, the unwilling, have always been fascinating to me because so little is known about them. Tolkien leaves them beside Cuivienen and then seemingly forgets about them. But I am not satisfied with that. I want more.

So I began to tell the tale of Thlenwe. Unfortunately, the story that is unfolding in my head is not going to be very pleasant for him. It is a dark tale and so even though I want to pursue it and explore those shadowy regions of the lore, I often find that it is easier to sit down and write about my naive Warden, Etaoin, than to try to get into the head of an ancient Elf who was captured and tortured by servants of Melkor. Thus the story has languished.

But I have not given up. I have a vision for where I want the story to go and I am going to do my best to keep following it. I hope that it will be enjoyable (as much as possible, anyway, what with all the torture and stuff) and enlightening to any who choose to accompany Thlenwe on his journey. Please feel free to comment and question. I would love to discuss my ideas.

This is more of a short interlude or link just to get me going again. Don’t forget to read part one and part two.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The light that at times reached Thlenwe in the depths of his pit was always a sickly yellowish green color. The scholar in him couldn’t help but wonder why though he knew the knowledge would certainly increase his horror. It was light enough now to see his hand in front of his face. Much good may it do me, he thought bitterly. His hand looked diseased in the unnatural illumination. And perhaps it is. What are they doing to me?
Memories, unbidden, flitted through Thlenwe’s mind. He recalled shadowy creatures pouring a vile drink down his throat and feeling his senses heighten. He recalled pain worse than any imagining as they put his every nerve to the test. Pain multiplied upon pain until his body could no longer stand the sensation and slipped into blissful unconsciousness. He tried to think of something, anything else, but his brain insisted on dwelling in those terrible memories.
Why? Why do they torture me? What do they want and why won’t they tell me what it is? Who are they?
A ghastly scream echoed around him. There were always screams coming from… somewhere. His own were among them when they took him from his pit and bound him to the red hot slab of stone where they made a playground of his nerves.
Why?
Thlenwe cried out as a brilliant white light flashed before his weakened eyes.
When he awoke there was complete darkness around him. Propped up against the rough wall of the pit, the first thing he noticed was that he couldn’t move any part of his body other than his head. He fought down a surge of panic. Then something stirred in the darkness and he realized he was not alone.
A Musical Alliance
Posted On: November 5th, 2009
Posted By: Fionnuala
For several months now I have been immersing myself in the unique LOTRO music system. I have learned to make my own ABCs with some measure of skill and I have partaken in the joys of private and public performance. In the process I’ve seen some of the possibilities of the music system, some of the amazing things that can be done with it. But I think there is more.
I have heard some of the most beautiful music in the world converted to ABC format and played in game. For a Minstrel like myself, there are few joys greater that gathering with 8 friends and playing Beethoven’s 6th Symphony 1st Movement here in LOTRO. I myself have translated two parts of Haydn’s gorgeous Creation oratorio to ABC. So I wonder, would it be possible to transcribe an entire symphony to play in concert? Are there others who would find an evening of Beethoven or Vivaldi or Bach as transcendent an experience as I would? What of other works? It needn’t be all classical. What of performing a concert of music from the LOTR movies? Or the entire Dark Side of the Moon album?
Some time ago Harperella came up with a fantastic idea. It was to be an event where people performed tales from Tolkien’s works through the use of music, emotes and in game effects. The event didn’t pan out but the premise was a good one. Since then my imagination has been afire with ideas for how tales from Arda’s history could be performed in game. Imagine an Elven Guardian as Fingolfin, decked out in an impressive armor set, striding forth and shouting a challenge to Morgoth to come forth and face him in combat. Imagine an elegantly dressed Elven maiden /dancing among the trees approached by an enthralled Captain as Luthien and Beren. Imagine a dozen music players raising up a song of creation at the bidding of Illuvatar only to be thwarted by a disruptive Melkor.
What is the nail in the coffin for these ideas? Numbers. Most Kins just don’t have enough people interested in playing music to make these kinds of ambitious ideas work. Which is why I would like to propose the formation of a musical alliance on Landroval. (Yes, something like the Eriador Music Society on Elendilmir, I guess. Though I was unaware of that group when I originally conceived the idea.) There are so many talented people here on Landroval. So lets all get together, regardless of race, class, level or Kinship, and make some seriously awesome music!
The musical alliance would be open to anyone. It wouldn’t matter what Kinship you are in or what you play. If you love music then you are eligible. We would meet up periodically to practice music together, to test new ABCs together and to put on large scale server wide musical events. And if you play on another server, don’t feel left out. You could always roll up a character here on Landroval to pariticpate.
I don’t want to just put on an average concert event. I want to blow people away with high quality music and I want to put on a show everyone will remember. I need people to help me do that. I am looking for people who are interested in the same. People who love to play music, people who love to make ABCs, people who would like to learn to make ABCs, people who have ideas for what can be done with the music system, people who would just have a good time being involved, but mostly people who can make some kind of committment to being a part of a group of LOTRO musicians.
Because this wouldn’t be for putting on average concerts I don’t want apathetic musicians either. I want people who would be willing to dedicate themselves to quality. By that I don’t mean that you have to be a virtuoso to participate. I simply mean that as a group we would need to strive for excellence. There would be standards for the material we would use. There would be standards of performance we would aim for.
Now that all might intimidate you. But I have found that anyone can be taught to use the music system well with just a little instruction. I was taught by the best on the server and I am eager to pass on what I have learned to others. I am eager to have friends to make music with. So if you or anyone you know would be interested in such an enterprise please let me know. I think it could be really fun. :)
Showdown in the Great Barrow!
I thought it would be appropriate to post the finish to this little story on Halloween. Make sure to check out part one.
“Down we go then.”
Etaoin shrieked as Ingolemo flicked a spider off of her shoulder.
“Spiders are such misunderstood creatures, don’t you think?” He grinned and winked at her.
Etaoin returned a glare. “Get on with it. How do we get out of here?”
“Fear not, my dear lady, I will have us through these cursed tunnels in no time and then perhaps an evening of fine dining and other delights available in several… establishments I know of in Bree…”
“Don’t push it, Lore-Master. And what did you mean by cursed tunnels? I thought they were empty?”
Ingolemo winced. “Well, in several occult texts I have read it is quite clear that the-”
“No, never mind.” Etaoin sighed. “I’m beginning to think you don’t really know anything about it. Let’s just try to find the way out.”
They proceeded through the cramped tunnels. Etaoin remained wary, keeping her shield up and her spear poised to strike. Several times they were forced to backtrack after coming out in large rooms full of creeping mist and empty slabs of stone. At length they came to a doorway with a huge skull motif.
“Remind me not to employ the architect who designed this place,” Ingolemo quipped. Etaoin rolled her eyes. “But seriously, we should probably try another tunnel. In my experience huge doors decorated with skulls are never a good sign.”
“You have much experience with such things?”
“I’ve… researched my fair share of tombs.”
“Undoubtedly.” Etaoin put her ear up close to the door. “Do you hear that?”
“Hear what?”
“It sounds like… voices.”
“Definitely another tunnel.”
“No, wait. I need to investigate this.” Before Ingolemo could stop her she wedged her javelin into the door and levered it open.
“Don’t be a fool. Anything could be down there!”
Etaoin raised an eyebrow. “In an empty tomb?”
“Alright! I wasn’t being entirely honest,” Ingolemo said. “I just wanted to get in here to look for… artifacts of important historical significance. But I didn’t dare enter alone.”
“You’re using me?”
“You make it sound worse than it is.”
Etaoin felt the heat rising in her face. “Well, now you’re in here, but I’m not about to help you rob the dead of their treasure.”
“Artifacts-”
“Treasure,” Etaoin said firmly. “Don’t lie to me again. Now I’m going to follow those voices because if there’s a threat to the people of Bree-land here I need to do something about it. You can either tag along or not. I don’t care.” She set off through the doorway.
“Fine!” Ingolemo called after her. “What do you think, Huginn?” he said to the raven that flapped around his shoulders. The bird cawed, as it always did. “Yes, I suppose we will have to follow her.”
Etaoin raced down the tunnel. As she rounded a corner she saw shadowy shapes in the distance, one very tall and one quite short. “Come, Ivar awaits us,” said a voice as cold as a dead winter night. Etaoin felt her legs tremble at the sound, but she pressed on following the figures.
She made another turn and then passed through another of the skull doors. Then the earth errupted in front of her. By reflex she brought her shield up hugh in front of her face and heard something scratch against its surface. She lunged under the shield with her spear and felt it clatter against something. Lowering her shield enough to she her opponent she beheld a risen corpse whose flesh had all but rotted attired in bits and pieces of ancient armor.
“Arise… Arise, my brothers!” it cried and more wights began to rise out of the mist covered ground.
Etaoin was surrounded. She felt claw hands grasping at her from all sides and attacked with desperation. Still they reached for her. As her shield was ripped from her grasp a fiery missile flew past her view and set on of the wights blazing. Huginn the raven flew into the face of another, and Ingolemo struck yet another hard in the skull with his shining staff. It’s head went rolling off into the mist and Etaoin fell to her knees as she watched the remaining wights scatter before Ingolemo’s fury.
When their path was again clear Ingolemo offered her a callused hand. Silently she accepted it and rose to her feet.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
“Instead of all this… fighting… I know this wonderful pub. Very cultural.”
Despite herself, Etaoin smiled. “Perhaps after I find out what’s going on in here. The voices I heard, they weren’t just wights. I think there’s something far more sinister happening.”
“And this is a reason to follow them?”
“I’m a Warden. It’s my duty.”
“Alright. But if we make it through this you owe me a quiet drink.”
“Done.”
Etaoin went more cautiously this time as they journeyed deeper into the Barrow, but she kept their pace swift. Soon they came out of the tunnels into a great chamber with a wooden stairway leading down to the floor. The figures she pursued were passing through it into another skull door.
But there were three now and it was clear that they were planning a large scale conflict. Without thinking Etaoin threw herself down the stairway toward them, spear in hand. Suddenly a wave of crippling fear radiated out from those she pursued. Both Etaoin and Ingolemo found themselves crouching on the floor, unable to move.
“Fools! I shall suffer your presence no longer,” said the voice that chilled Etaoin to the marrow of her bones.
As the three figures hurried away Etaoin and Ingolemo were beset again by wights. With steel, claw and fire they managed to overcome their foes and raced on. They came out into what seemed to be a kingly burial chamber, but instead of a body there was a throne. Upon the throne sat an Undead monstrosity.
“You have made it very far. I am impressed,” said the wight as he rose from his throne. “But unfortunately for you this is the end of your journey. I am the Lord of this barrow and am not intent on being removed. It is time for you to rest, for eternity!”
It leapt at them. Screaming in fear and anger Etaoin thrust with her spear. Huginn swooped in and Ingolemo used his arcane knowledge to weaken it, but it was not so easy to slay a wight lord. Dodging and lunging Etaoin fought wildly against the beast yet she could not prevail. Suddenly a shaft of light fell from the sky.
“What? It cannot be!” cried the wight lord.
Another voice, quite different in its wholesomeness came from the recesses of the chamber. “What you be a-thinking? Dead men should not be waking! Vanish into sunlight, leave your barrows empty!”
There stood Tom Bombadil, calmly humming to himself as the dessicated body of the wight lord crumbled to dust. Behind him a light shone where the passage led out of the barrow again.
Ingolemo brushed off his robe and adjusted his eye patch. “See? Empty barrow. I knew it all along.” Etaoin laughed aloud with relief. Ingolemo approached the vacated throne, eyeing it greedily.
The 123s of ABCs: Making a Multi Part Midi
Posted On: October 27th, 2009
Posted in: Musical Musings
Alright I’m going to go through the same process I did for the last two installments, but with the intent of creating a multi part Midi this time. I am again going to choose a piece of music from the collection of Mary Jean Holmes. This time I’ll try the Gandalf and Saruman piece and so I will download the Midi ensemble (not the Midi guitar). Here’s what it looks like when I first pull it up in Anvil Studio:
There are 6 tracks in this midi but I don’t want it to be a 6 part ABC so first I’m going to take a close look at the track and see what I can get rid of and what I can merge. First I notice that Track 2 and Track 5 are identical so I’m going to delete track 5, it isn’t necessary. I do this by clicking on Track at the top and selecting “delete”. Track 7 is also identical so I will delete that as well. This leaves me with 4 tracks which is manageable.
Next I’m going to assign all the tracks to the instruments I think will play well in LOTRO. So I assign Track 2 to Clarinet, Track 3 to Acoustic Guitar Nylon (for Lute) and leave Track 4 as Flute. I am not yet sure what I am going to do with Track 6. I have noticed that Track 3 contains the same notes as Track 6 so I might delete it. First I am going to mute Track 6 and listen to the Midi with the current changes. As an experiment I am going to assign Track 6 as Baritone Sax (Horn) and listen again. I like the deep tones of the horn as an accompaniment so I think I will keep it in as an optional track.
The next step is to make sure that all the notes in each track are within the range of the chosen instrument. Fortunately, all the notes are within range and we don’t need to transpose anything. There are no 64th notes to worry about and definitely no more that 6 notes playing at a time. This is a very simple piece of music. We’re ready to save and begin converting. I am saving the song as GandSedit.
So next I open up Midi2abc, browse for my edited midi, enter the tempo from Anvil Studio and click “midi2abc” in the bottom left corner.
Next I edit the file. I get rid of all lines beginning with % and edit the T: line to reflect the song name, author and instrument, thus:
X: 11
T: Gandalf and Saruman by Mary Jean Holmes- Lute
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
Q:1/4=110
K:C % 0 sharps
Now this is where I explain how I use the X: line. In my abc files all the tracks are together in one file, I do not have each instrument part as a separate file. To make this work I use an indexing system (created by Eske of Gweth Valacirca) where all the instruments in the game are assigned to a series of numbers like so:
1-9    Percussion
10s    Lute
20s    Harp
30s    Theo
50s    Flute
60s    Horn
70s    Clarinet
80s    Pipes
The instrument’s index number is place on the X: line. All the lute parts in my abc files are indexed in the 10s.  (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, etc.) All the harps are in the 20s, and so forth. The first number is the instrument, the second is part number. So Lute 1 is always 11, Lute 2 is 12, Lute 3 is 13, etc. Then if you want to play one of the parts in a file you simply need to include the X: number after the song name. For example:
/play GandS 11 sync
to play the Lute part or
/play GandS 51 sync
to play the Flute part. Now I also need to transpose the Lute, Horn and Flute to make sure they play correctly in game. Lute and Horn need to be transposed an octave up once and the Flute needs to be transposed an octave down once with Tools>transpose. Now I am finished editing so I will save this file in my LOTRO music folder.
There’s one more thing to think about: dynamics. Dynamics (instrument volume) need to be added into the ABC not the Midi. These are the different dynamic notations you can add:
+ppp+ +pp+ +p+ +mp+ +mf+ +f+ +ff+ +fff+
I want the flute in this abc to be more in the background but flutes have a tendency to stand out. So I am going to add +p+ just before the notes in the flute track. I am going to do the same with the Horn. As a tip, if you have a theorbo part you might as well go ahead and add +fff+ to the abc for theorbo because it tends to be very muted. You can always go back to the file to change the dynamics after you test the song.
The song is finished! The two songs I’ve picked so far to demonstrate have been (intentionally) very simply and easy to transcribe. Next time I will pick something more complex that will require more merging/transcribing and other things to prepare. I will also be looking for a song with a drum part so that I can demonstrate how to convert the drums, which will be a post to its self. I hope these posts have been useful. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
Here’s today’s finished product. (While I did test to make sure all the parts are working correctly, I did not take the time to test all of the parts together. So play this at your own risk. ;)
A Minstrel’s Journey: Slipping Away…
Posted On: October 26th, 2009
Posted By: Fionnuala
Posted in: Uncategorized
Fionnuala paused in the doorway and listened to the sound of Arachas’ hammer pounding away in the forge adjacent to their house. She new that he would be working into the night on a special commission. And that meant now was her chance to slip away.
She closed the door softly behind her though she knew her husband couldn’t hear her over the roar of the fire and the ring of metal on metal. The glow of the fires warmed the air outside even though the chill of winter had come and she took another moment to bask in its comfort.
Am I doing the right thing? She wasn’t sure about that, but she knew she was doing what she had to do.
The rumors had begun pouring in from the east. Darkness was spreading. The lands of the Free Peoples were in danger. But more importantly, the Enemy had arisen again. Fionnuala felt the tingling heat of rage welling up inside her at the thought. Gripping her flute case to her closely, Fionnuala made her way to the road out of the city.
As she was passing the outer limit of the city she walked past a small house lit up from within. As she walked by she heard someone strike up a harp. It was a simple tune that every Elf learned from an early age, a night tune to say farewell to the Sun and welcome the Moon. Fionnuala found herself humming along softly.
For a moment she considered running back. Then she made herself walk on.
Oh, my love, please understand. I do not want to leave you, but I cannot drag you into another war. Not after what the last one did to you. I do not want to be parted from you, but there is something I must do. For me, for us. I will return to you when I can… If I can.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is meant to be the song that Fionnuala hears as she leaves her home. I like it played on the harp though it can also be played on the lute.

We all need a reason to leave our homes and get involved in the great events of these times. No one does anything without a reason. For an Elf, it can be difficult to come up with a good reason that isn’t terribly cliche or just unbelievable. I like to think the reason I came up with for Fionnuala is compelling, but you’ll have to tell me as it’s revealed in these vignettes. :)

In the last installment I demonstrated how to prepare a simple Midi for conversion. In this post I will demonstrate the conversion process that I use. I will be using the program Midi2abc. My version of this program was sent to me directly by Eske of Gweth Valacirca and thus I am not sure how else to obtain it. If you feel comfortable doing so anyone wishing to obtain this program may contact me in game on Landroval or PM me here on the forums and I will send it to you. Here’s what it looks like when I first open it up:

I begin by clicking on the gear icon and selecting “midi2abc”. That brings up this window:

It is currently showing the last midi I converted as the “input midi file” so the first thing I do is browse for the current file. The “output abc file” should always stays constant. I have the “unit length” currently set to “from tempo in entry box” which means that I will return to the midi in Anvil Studio to find out what the tempo is to enter there. The tempo is displayed in the top right corner in Anvil Studio and I find that it is 65 so I enter it in the box. Anacrusis should remain as “none”, the Key Signature should stay constant as the “specified key” of “C Am”. LOTRO does not actually recognize key signatures, it simply reads the notes from the ABC. Everything else remains the same.

The only other changeable number is the L: denominator. This establishes what the base note length is and will for our purposes be either 8 or 16 depending on the tempo of the song and what kind of note values are in the song. (I will explain this in detail in a future post explaining the notation.) For now I’m going to leave it as 8. This is what it should look like:

Now I click the “midi2abc” button on the bottom left. This has converted it, but nothing happens immediately after you click it. Next I click the icon that looks like a pencil over paper and select “edit file”. This is what I get:

Now I am going to edit the file. In a multi part song I would use the X: line to distinguish which instrument track it is, but since this is a solo piece I am going to leave it as is. The T: line is the title of the song, the information that will display in game when you play it or if you /playlist it. I like to include the title of the song, the author and label the instrument it should be played on. So for the first track it will be T: Galadriel’s Song of Eldamar by Mary Jean Holmes- Harp. The M, L, Q, and K lines remain the same. I am going to delete the V line and any other lines in the abc that begin with %. Anything beginning with % is just a note the author of the midi included and can freely be taken out. So, the notation at the top of the first track should look like this:

X: 1
T: Galadriel’s Song of Eldamar by Mary Jean Holmes- Harp
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
Q:1/4=65
K:C % 0 sharps

and then the actual notes start. Now, in LOTRO some instruments end up being played higher than normal, others lower than normal and some just as they should be. Thus:

Written note plays an octave higher: flute
Written note plays as is: bagpipe, clarinet
Written note plays an octave lower: horn, lute, harp
Written note plays 2 octaves lower: theorbo

So what we have to do now is transpose the tracks so that they play correctly in game. Harp will play an octave lower in game so we need to transpose all the notes one octave up. Highlight the notes, go to Tools at the top and select Transpose> octave up. Here’s what I’ve got now:

Now I go to file, save as, and save the song to my LOTRO music folder. I am calling it Eldamarsolo. I can now pull it up in notepad from my LOTRO music folder. There are a couple other small things I do at this point. midi2abc places a |\ at the end of each line of abc text for some reason and just to make it look neater (and because Eske told me to) I go into the file and replace |\ with just |. Also at the top of the file I add this line: % Transcribed by Fionnuala of Landroval. LOTRO will not read any line preceded by a % so you can use that to make any notes you want to. Remember to save after making any changes.

Now I go in game and test each track to make sure it plays properly. There are many different error messages you can receive if there is something wrong with the abc. I will talk about these in detail in a later post. First I do a quick /playlist eldamarsolo* and it comes up with this:

Test/eldamarsolo, Galadriel’s Song of Eldamar by Mary Jean Holmes- Harp

So far so good. Now to play it. And… I think it came out well! Here’s my finished product. Enjoy!

Fateful Meeting in the Land of the Dead

Etaoin’s knuckles whitened around her yew-shafted spear. Ahead of her lay the barrows of the the north realms. She glanced up at the nearly full moon shining down on the ancient monoliths and shook her head in confusion. It had been day when she set out for the barrow hills. She had meant to come there around noon and be well away before sunset. The tales that the townsfolk had told her began to ring true. It is always night in the barrows.

Her common sense told her to turn back now. Her people knew about the places of the dead and knew that they should be avoided at all costs. But she thought about the smugly knowing smile she would receive from Daisy Appledore if she failed in her duty and steeled her resolve. Keeping her shield up, she descended into the chill fog.

Etaoin wondered what she had been expecting. So far she hadn’t seen anything more sinister than the rats, worms and barghests that hunted the area. Still, she held her spear at the ready as she approached another huddled doorway of stone.

“What are you doing?”

The man crouched in front of the barrow jumped up with a startled cry. “Damnit girl, is this the kind of place to go around sneaking up on people?” he said as he lowered his heavy wooden staff.

Etaoin flushed hotly. “It’s not the sort of place to find people in general,” she retorted. “So what are you doing here?”

The man took in the spear, shield and javelins that were typical of the law keeping Wardens of the area. A sudden smile broke out on his somewhat care-lined face. “My dear lady, didn’t we meet before? Ah yes! You were the angel who freed me from my unjust confinement. It seems fate has thrown us together again. And one should never resist her promptings.” He reached for her hand, was deterred by the spear tip pointed in his direction and instead made an awkward bow. “Fear not, my dear lady, for you are in the company of Ingolemo, Master of the Elements and Friend of Beasts, Keeper of Ancient Mysteries and Maker of fine dyes and particularly effective restorative draughts.”

Etaoin felt her eyebrows climbing her forehead. “Is that so? And what is that you are hiding behind your foot?”

Ingolemo shifted to hide the items behind him better. “Did I mention that with my knowledge of Arcane Lore I can-”

Etaoin dodged around him and found a small collection of valuables stacked neatly outside the partially open door of the barrow. A few rusting swords with gilded scabbards were stacked against a dilapidated old chest over which had been draped a couple of jeweled belts. Etaoin felt the blood drain from her face. “You’re robbing a barrow?”

“I know what this looks like but…”

“Are you mad?”

“Well, surely they don’t need it…”

“You’re stealing from the dead! Have you no morals at all?”

“Yes, as a matter of fact. I have quite a few admirable qualities…”

What was that?”

There was a rumbling in the ground beneath their feet as the soil bubbled and a dessicated corpse burst out upon them.

Etaoin screamed and fumbled her spear. Ingolemo rolled his eyes and shoved her out of the way. He whistled shrilly and a white-feathered raven swooped out of the sky with talons aimed at the wight. Etaoin covered her eyes as Ingolemo threw something smoldering red at the wight and the decaying skin burst into a column of flame. The wight roared.

“Run, you silly girl!” Ingolemo cried as he made a grab for his new found stash.

Etaoin pulled him away. “Leave it. Now, how do we get out of here?”

“No idea,” Ingolemo replied and dashed away to the south. Etaoin followed. A maze of barrows surrounded them and the ground was shuddering ominously.

As they ran they saw more wights bursting forth from the earth or emerging from shattered barrow doorways all around them. As an army they began to follow.

“We’ve got to find somewhere to hide,” said Ingolemo. “Over here.” He veered off toward an imposing stone edifice.

“You are mad! You want us to hide from wights in a barrow?”

Ingolemo glared at her impatiently. “Look, this is the Great Barrow. I know for a fact that it was built for a King who never was buried here. He died far from here and the barrow was never filled. We’ll be safe.”

Etaoin had no choice but to take him at his word. The wights were getting closer. She nodded and the two pried the huge door open.

“Now, if we follow this tunnel, I think there’ll be another exit closer to town once we get past the burial chamber.”

“Are you sure about this?” Etaoin asked breathlessly.

“No. But do you have a better plan?”

Etaoin shook her head.

Ingolemo flashed another toothy smile and struck his staff on the ground, producing a strange blue glow. “Down we go then.”
