So, at this rate…

… I should get to 60 before the summer is out.  Well, one can dream.

I went from level 40 to 48 in the month of June.  I think that’s fairly good progress.  I’ll be happy if I hit 60 sometime in the late summer/early fall.  Really, I’ll be happy to hit 60 whenever it happens!  I feel a little strange, but also excited, about having a character at the level cap.  I think it’s mostly because I’ve never had a character at the level cap.  I was an altaholic in my first few months in this game, unable to commit to any one character.  When I created Mirthwyn, everything changed - I absolutely love this toon.  Before I started playing LOTRO, I played WoW, and suffered the same altaholicism (is that even a word?  IT IS NOW!).  I left the game for LOTRO before getting my WoW main to the end.  I also found that the idea of WoW endgame intimidated me a lot.  I kind of didn’t even want to get there.

But I feel like there is so much in LOTRO to build the confidence.  The places you go, the things you do… it makes me feel, at least, that there isn’t anything I can’t handle once I get there.  It helps that I’m also in a kinship that I absolutely love, and I think it will be really fun to raid with these folks.

And then I think to myself, “Raid?  What are you saying!?”  I guess I’ve always had a bit of social anxiety when it comes to being in a group.  I’m afraid of being the one who makes a deadly mistake and causes the wipe.  I know it’s sort of silly to feel this way, since probably most people, if not everyone, has caused a wipe at some point in their gaming career.  Plus, sometimes it’s the only way we really learn how to play our class, by committing a really foolhardy mistake.

But in any case, my advancement in this game never ceases to amaze me, for some reason.  Maybe it’s because when I started playing MMO’s, I started just for the heck of it - a totally casual thing, and at the time, something to take my mind off of studying for the bar exam.  I used play as a reward for hours of good studying.  I didn’t expect to succeed or be good.  I did find that I enjoyed it a lot.  But I always associated MMO’s with hardcore gamers, people who were just good at them, as if they had some innate talent or ability to play.  I know now that isn’t true.  Gaming is just like anything else.  There’s a learning curve, and once you have some experience, you can really grow a lot, and become great at what you do.

I still have moments when I don’t remember to use some of my class/race abilities.  But I’ve yet to cause a full fellowship wipe (if memory serves).  I hope to keep playing and learning and get Mirthwyn to the endgame stuff, because it’s a whole new world once you get there, from what I understand, and I’m finding myself really excited to experience it for the first time.

I’ve certainly wiped more than my fair share of groups and even a raid or two. :P And that’s both on my LM and my minstrel (used to have one at lvl 58 before I deleted her).

I’m a firm believer in this game should be fun for ‘you’. If you want to race to the end game and be the first there, go for it. If you want to pace yourself, that’s what you should do. I know some who spend most of their game time crafting. LoTRO has so many different aspects it makes the game customisable for us. :)

  2. Worros Says:

I have yet to wipe my group but as I am playing a minstrel I am sure I will get blamed for all of them. =)

I guess that is the curse of a mini.

  3. Harperelle Says:

I know how you feel about slow levelling. I had a binge of gaming this past week and made it to 57! Was absolutely amazed. But now I’m slowing down a bit and playing around with the festival and such again. See you around!

  4. LeBlanc13 Says:

You’d have no fear of causing a party wipe if you adventured with me and my kinsman Bobisox. It’s guaranteed to be Bobisox that causes it….like clockwork. He’ll take his level 60 Human Hunter and start pulling everything in the room to us whether we’re ready for it or not. He lacks what most of us call patience.

We were working on Volume 2 quests. After our the first fight, we lost the RK who needed to respawn and everyone else was beat up pretty badly. We spoke as a group and decided that my guardian would then pull all the monsters as we went through to ensure we didn’t bite off more than we could chew again. We also talked about me and the other guardian in the group securing aggro before others could fire.

Bobisox then proceded to wait about a minute after that conversation. The RK had gotten back into the instance but was about 2 minutes away from our position. Without checking with anyone else he started shooting several mobs to draw aggro to us.

He died in about 2 seconds and the rest of us got crushed pretty quickly with no healing.

His response was “Sorry, my fault!” (really?)

No wonder most of our PUGs break up before the quest is completed.

So what you really need to do is find someone to blame when a wipe occurs and stick with them. It sort of works for me… I haven’t been blamed for one party wipe yet!

    ;)

  5. LilithielSkye Says:

I sympathize with the slow levelling and raid anxiety! One of the best things about LOTRO is that there isn’t as much of an onus to hit max level right away, at least compared to the other MMOs I’ve played — and there are so many different ways to advance through this game.

  6. LadyFayina Says:

I too have social anxyity when in a pug. My heart pounds, my palms sweat, I am so scared someone is going to blame me for something they did and I get really freaked out hehe. I’m glad you’re enjoying the game and hope you see 60 when you’re ready =) taking your time is the best thing about this game, there is so much to do and see.

  7. Valaraen Says:

Count me in on the Raid Anxiety (great term, ha!).

And I COMPLETELY understand about the forgetting how to use (or to use at all!) class and race abilities. I see you’re a hunter too, so trust me, I feel your pain.

I’ve been 60 since the night before the Lothlorien expansion went live - but still haven’t done any “end game” content. I’ve never raided once in my life! To be honest I’m sort of a wuss about it - I just “know” I’ll aggro everything and OMG WE’LL ALL DIE AND IT’LL BE MY FAULT.

I’m starting to get over my “raid anxiety” but one thing I don’t think I’ll *ever* be able to stop feeling squeamish about? Voice chat. I’ve noticed so many kinships and raid groups usually REQUIRE it, and that just makes me dig my heels in and say “OH HELL NO.” :\

    >_<
