Silrien is an elf from the golden woods of Lothlórien. Her people are well-known as the Wood-Elves throughout Middle-Earth, but more properly they are called the Galadhrim, since the term “Wood-Elves” also refers to the elves of Mirkwood. Altogether, they are the Silvan Elves, who aided the Last Alliance in the war to overthrow Sauron at the end of the Second Age, more than 3000 years ago. They are also the descendants of the Nandor, who remained in the vales of the river Anduin long ago, when the Eldar Elves left Middle-Earth, the land of their awakening, for Valinor, on their Great Journey.
Now, near the end of the Third Age, with Sauron’s strength mounting again, the Galadhrim have concentrated in the haven of Lothlórien, under the magical protection of Galadriel’s ring, which preserves life and wards against evil. Lórien is known for its beauty, and is currently the only place in Middle Earth where the golden Mallorn trees grow. “There are no trees like the trees of that land. For in the autumn their leaves fall not, but turn to gold. Not till the spring comes and the new green opens do they fall, and then the boughs are laden with yellow flowers; and the floor of the wood is golden, and golden is the roof, and its pillars are of silver… My heart would be glad if I were beneath the eaves of that wood, and it were springtime!” ~ Legolas (FotR)
Tall, strong, beautiful, and graceful, Silrien is a believer in all things good. She seeks truth, defends the weak and oppressed, and regards highly those who demonstrate goodness in character. She enjoys studying ancient texts of lore, and dreams of peace in Middle Earth. Her passions are for things which never die, but love is currently far from her thoughts, as she is deeply troubled by the rising of Sauron’s minions. Silrien’s first encounter with the world’s rising evils took place when she was young, during a sojourn to the refuge of Edhelion, near Thorin’s Hall, in the Blue Mountains. While studying the libraries there, the refuge came under attack by the Dourhand dwarves. It was eventually destroyed, and abandoned. Now, centuries later, the Dourhands are just one of many enemies terrorizing the lands. Silrien knows she must do something to help the Free People. She has returned to the ruins of Edhelion with Elrond’s sons to uncover the lost libraries and find direction in her efforts. She will not rest until the dark evils of Middle Earth are forever exterminated.
“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.” ~ Bilbo Baggins
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
Pursuing it with weary feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
